G.L.Fuentes

Ans. Lencho hoped for a downpour or at least a shower.

2. Why did Lencho say the raindrops were like new coins?

Ans. Lencho said that the raindrops were like new coins because they aroused in him a new hope for a good harvest. He thought that he could earn enough that year.

3. How did the rain change? What had happened to Lencho’s fields?

Ans. During the meal big drops of rain began to fall, Lencho was quite happy, but suddenly a strong wind began to blow and along with the rain very large hail storms began to fall.

For an hour the hailed rained on the house, the garden, the cornfield and the entire valley. The field was white, as if covered with salt. Not a leaf remained on the trees. The corn was totally destroyed and the flowers were gone from the plants.

4.What were Lencho’s feeling when the hail stopped?

Ans. When the hail stopped, Lencho’s  heart was filled with sadnessto see his cornfield. He stood in the middle of the fields and said to his sons that a plaque of locusts could have left something but the hail left nothing. He further told they would have no corns and go hungry that year.

5.Who are What did Lencho have faith in? What did he do?

Ans. Lencho had faith in God. He thought only of his one hope, the help of God.

The following Sunday, at daybreak, Lencho began to write a letter which he himself would carry to town and place in the mail box. It was nothing less than a letter to God.

6. Who read the letter?

Ans. The postmaster read the letter.

7. What did the postmaster do then?

Ans. Seeing the letter to God, the postmaster decided to answer the letter. But when he read the letter he understood that to answer the letter, he needed something more than goodwill, ink and paper. But he stuck to his resolution and he asked for money from his employees, he himself gave a part of his salary, and several friends of him were obliged to give something ‘for an act of Charity’.

The postmaster could collect only 70 pesos. So, he put the money in an envelope addressed to Lencho and with it a letter containing only a single word as a signature : God.

8.Was Lencho surprised to find a letter for him with money in it?

Ans. Lencho was not the least surprised to find the letter with money in it. He had full faith that he would definitely receive a letter from god.

THINKING ABOUT THE TEXT

1.Who does Lencho have complete faith in ? which sentences in the story tell you this?

Ans.  Lencho had complete and deep faith in God.

The sentences in the story which tell us this are: “Lencho thought only of his one hope : the help of God, whose eyes as he had been instructed see everything, even what is deep in one’s conscience.

2. Why does the postmaster send money to Lencho? Why does he sign the letter ‘God’?

Ans. The postmaster sent money to Lencho so as not to shake his faith in God.

The postmaster signed the letter “God” so that Lencho would believe that he had truly been sent a letter from God.

3. Did Lencho try to find out who sent the money to him? Why/Why not?

Ans. No, Lencho did not try to find out who had sent the money to him.

He had unshakable faith in God. He had firm believe in God that he would definitely receive a letter from him.

4. Who does Lencho think has taken the rest of the money ? What is the irony in the situation?

Ans. Lencho thought that the rest of the money had been taken by the post office’s employees.

The irony in the situation is that the post office employees only sent him the money but Lencho blamed them for having stolen his money.

5.Are there people like Lencho in real world? What kind of a person would you say he is?

Ans. No, there are no people like Lencho in real world.

The characteristics of Lencho are : [i] Stupid , [ii] unquestioning [iii] Comical.

6. There are two kinds of conflict in the story: between humans and nature and between human themselves. How are these conflicts illustrated?

Ans. Lencho was an innocent man. He had full faith in God. He cultivated corns in his field but the only thing his field needed that morning was a downpour or at least a shower. Lencho believed that god will definitely fulfil his wish. During the meal that, just as Lencho predicted, big drops of rain began to fall. He was very happy so delighted was his field. But suddenly a strong wind began to blow and along with the rain very large hailstorms began to fall, and his field was left empty with no flowers in it.

On the other hand, even after the conflict between Lencho and nature, he did not lose his faith in god. He believed that God id almighty. He decided to write a letter which he himself would carry to town and place in the mail. It was nothing less than a letter to god. The postman after having read the address of the letter, he showed it to the postmaster. The postmaster broke out laughing but in order not to shake the writer’s faith in god he decided to reply his letter. He collected  money from his employees, he himself gave a part of his salary, and several friends of him were obliged to give something ‘for an act of Charity’. The postmaster could collect only 70 pesos. So, he put the money in an envelope addressed to Lencho and with it a letter containing only a single word as a signature : God. But when Lencho got his reply, he was shocked and angry. He thought that God could neither make a mistake nor could he deny his request. So, Lencho thought that the employees are a bunch of crooks and wrote another letter to god and asked him to send the rest of money to him since he needed it very uch but not through mails.

These illustrated the conflict between men and men.
