Understanding the text:

1. Contrast the Chinese view of art with the European view with example.

Ans- Chinese art is imaginative and spiritual in nature, whereas European painting are based on actual views or real objects. European painters paints with delicate realism, they wants us to borrow his eyes and look at a particular landscape exactly as the painter saw it from a specific angle. Chinese painter does not choose a single viewpoint, here in Chinese the painter does not want to borrow his eyes instead enter his mind. The painting in  Chinese is an essence of inner life and sprit of Asia. 

2. Explain the concept of Shanshui.

Ans- Shanshui means the mountain water which together represent the word landscape. It explains the type of Chinese painting that incorporates natural landscape, spiritual spaces and conceptual spaces. It also reflects two opposing poles that represent the Daoist view of the universe.

3. what do you understand by the term "outsider art" and "art brut or raw art"?

  Ans- The word Outsider art refers to the art that is created by someone without any professional training to be an artist and thus in a way do not have right to be called an artist. Interest in this art category has remarkably grown in the contemporary world at an international level. These artists, though no formal education, show immense talent and artistic insight. Their paintings provide a stimulating contrast to the mainstream art. 

         Art brut or raw art are the works of an artist that are considered unconventional and hold certain cultural as well as artistic values. Anything and everything from a tin or a sink or a broken down car or any ragded matter can be used as material in this art form. A marvelous example of raw art is seen in the Rock Garden of Chandigarh created by the untutored genius Nek Chand.

4. who was Wu Daozi? What did he paint for the emperor.

Ans- Wu Daozi was a Chinese painter who lived in the eight century and had been commissioned by the Tang Emperor XuanZong to decorate a palace wall.

    He painted a wonderful landscape full of forest, high mountains, waterfall, clouds floating in an immense sky, men on hilly paths, birds in flight etc.

5. what was the reaction of the emperor when he saw his painting?

Ans- The painting of Wu Daozi left the emperor stunned with its exquisite beauty. The emperor was spellbound and thus has no words to describe the beauty of the landscape painting. He was move than impressed with the painter's creation. For a long while, the Emperor stood in front of the painting and admired the wounderful scene, discovering forests, high mountains, waterfalls, clouds floating in an immense sky, men in hilly paths, birds in flight etc.

    It was the painter Wu Daozi, who afterwards tried to teach him the real inner meaning of the painting. The painter clapped his hands and entrance of the cave opened. Wu Daozi entered the door and the entrance closed behind him. Before the emperor could move or utter a word, the painting vanished and not a trace of Wu Daozi's brush was left and he was never seen again.

Ans- The things that were painted on the landscape are- forests, High Mountains, Waterfalls, coulds floating in an immense sky, Men on hilly paths, Birds in flight.

7. What is the role of such stories of Wu Daozi in Chinese classical education?

Ans- Such stories played an important part in Chinese classical education. They help in two ways firstly they helped the master to guide his pupil in the right direction and secondly the stories reveal the spirt in which art was considered in ancient China.

How is Nek Chand, true representative of outside art or raw art? Describe Nek Chand achievement in the world of art?

Ans- The India Born and altogether untrained artist Nek Chand developed the concept of Outside art. Around the time, when Dubuffet was propounding his concept in India and Untutored genius was creating paradise. His art is the art of an untrained visionary. The notion of art brut or raw art was of works that were in their raw state as regards cultural and artistic influences. Anything and everything from a tin to a sink to a broken down car could be material for a work of art, something Nek Chand has taken to dizzying heights. 

    His creation of a paradise using waste material at Chandigarh drew the attention of the world. It is said to be the art of those who have no right to be called artists because they have received no formal training. But sometimes such artists show remarkable talent and insight. Thus, this man is now hailed as Indian's biggest contributor to outsider art. The fiftieth issue spring 200's of Raw Vision a Uk based magazine pioneer in outside art publications, features Nek Chand and his Rock Garden Sculpture women by the waterfall in its anniversary issue cover.
