Poem- Father to Son:

1.       What is the father’s wish?

Ans- The father greatest wish is for his son to return to his house. As a child, he was a prodigal son but he wants him back to the house he knew. He didn’t want his son to move around and make his own world. He is ready to forgive at any cost as long as he is able to reshape him up from the long bounded sorrow to a new love.

2.       What is the irony in the poem?

Ans- The poet had highlighted a sharp and contrasting relationship in the poem between the father and the son. The irony which the poet talks about is that they have liked many years together and yet he knows nothing much about his son.

3.       What does the poet mean by silence surrounds us?

Ans- The poem depicts a relationship between a father and a son that has drifted apart due to lack of communication and understanding. They are like strangers even after living under the same roof the growing indifferences between them leads to silence that surrounds them.

4.       Why is the father unhappy with his son?

Ans- In the poem “Father to son” the father is unhappy with the son because the son is unlike his father in most aspects and has his own thoughts and interest in spite of haring been brought up in the environment and with the values that the father had provided him.

5.       Who is the prodigal son in the poem?

Ans- The prodigal son is a Biblical reference from the new Testament’s parables of Jesus. The Prodigal son in the poem is the son who has drifted away from the father due to lack of understanding and communication between them. The father is ready to forgive his prodigal son and wants to accept him back to the house, the one which he always know.

6.       Why do both of them put on empty hand?

Ans- The relationship between the father and his son have a bridge apart. They no longer live under the same roof. The father longs for those beautiful days that he had spent with his son when he was a child. But now things have changed. The son is now a grown up man and has drifted away from him. They both put on empty hand as they seek to teach out to each other devoid of precious baggage.

7.       What is the meaning of empty handed?

Ans- The word empty hand signifies that both the father and the son want to forgive each other and extend a hand of friendship to each other.

 

8.       Like the reasons behind the unhappiness of the father? What is his problem?

Ans- The poem “ Father to son” reveals an internal conflict that a father undergoes when he falls to understand his son due to the generations gap between them. The dad expresses his grief as well as his unhappiness by mentioning his inability to understand his own son. In spite have been living under the same roof for years. But due to lack of communication they both misunderstands each other.

              Moreover, the father’s problem is that he does not have communication with his son and due to which he is not aware of his own son’s likes and dislikes. Therefore the father hopes for a new relationship to build up between them.
