Ans- The village girl was afraid that some serpent might sting her and evil spirit haunting the place would cast wicked on her and will smite her.

Ans- The shadows of the evening are compared to the black birds in the sky. This all happenings signify fear and anxiety in the mind of the village girl. Ans- There are two birds mentioned in the poem, white crane and owl. Here the white crane symbolized happiness and eternal youth and the owl symbolized wisdom and mystery. The owl is also known as night bird.

7. Describe the feelings of the girl in the course of the poem. 2018

Ans- The village girl goes with a picture to fetch water and she stops there to listen to the song of the boatman. While listing to the song she gets late and the sun was setting so she later regrets because it was getting dark. She was afraid to the dark, on her way home with picture full of water. There was no light on the road and also no moonlight either. The girl is now scared and thinks of being bitten by a serpent and smitten by evil spirit. She also fears of the storms and lighting that might strike her to death. All these fear makes are worried and she prays to god to protect her and guide her home. Apart from her personal fear she also worries about her mother who might cry for her and her brother who might think of different reason for her delay in reaching home.
