1.       Who was Hana? What did she notice coming out of the mist? (2019)

Ans- Hana was a beautiful Japanese girl who was married to Dr. Sadao Hoki.

                            She noticed something black coming out of the mist. It was a man, he staggered a few steps and then he fell on his face and lay there.

2.       Write a character sketch of Dr. Sadao Hoki as depicted in “The Enemy”. (2019)

Ans- Dr. Sadao Hoki was the only son of his father, and his father’s only concern was his education. Dadao hoki was sent to America at the age to twenty two to study surgery and medicine. He was the first doctor and very wonderful surgeon. He was kept in Japan after knowing his worth by the old general. Dr Sadao Hoki had much love for his Japanese culture. He married Hana only after confirmation that she was pure Japanese i.e. both her parents were Japanese.

              Dr.Sadao Hoki’s heart was overflowed with human kindness. His kindness can be seen when he gave shelter to a young American prisoner, treated his wounds and after his health was proper he gave him his private boat to escape to a safe place. He also filled the boat with food, water and quilts. But he wasn’t  keeping his Japanese Army in Dark, he informed about the incident to the old general. As nothing was done by the Japanese army so he helped the young prisoner flee. In this way he did his duty too and also true to his nation.

3.       Why did the servents leave Dr Sadao’s house?

Ans- Japan was at a war with America, i.e. both were enemy to each other. And in this crucial time Dr Sadao Hoki gave shelter to an American prisoner. He was doing his duty as a doctor and trying to save the prisoners life. The servants did not like him doing such generosity, they considered it as an act of treachery. Thus the servants decided to leave Dr Sadao’s house.

4.       To choose between professional loyalty and patriotism was a dilemma for Dr Sadao. How did he succeed in betraying neither? (2015)/ Dr Sadao faced a dilemma. Should he use his surgical skills to save the life or should he hand over the American prisoner to the Japanese army.

Ans- Since he was a Doctor his profession loyalty  never allows a life to die if he could save the life despite of any barrier. On evening when he found a man staggered a few steps and then he fell on his face and lay there, he notice that he was badly injured but he was an enemy soldier. He thought for a while and ignore everything a decided to treat him, he performed an operation on the man and took good care of him till he gain a sound health. This way he able to perform his professional loyalty.

But he was a patriot and had great love for his nation. He knew his this act will not be accepted by the Japanese army. Therefore, he wrote a letter to the authorities about it and tried to inform the authority about the incident. He even told the old general everything. Both Dr Sadao and his wife waited for the action against the enemy soldier. But nothing happened so he later helped the young prisoner escape as he cannot keep him for a long a time at his home. Thus, he succeeded in betraying neither his professional loyalty nor patriotism.
